Hnutí DUHA Šelmy (formerly Hnutí DUHA Olomouc) is a branch of the Czech NGO Hnutí DUHA, based in Olomouc and working nationwide. It has focused on large carnivores since 1995, systematically since 1999, and is today the most experienced team protecting wolves, lynx, brown bears and wildcats in the Czech Republic.
I support them personally, because top predators are the clearest test of how seriously we take nature protection. A wolf or a lynx cannot be locked into a reserve - their home ranges span hundreds of square kilometres, so we can only keep them if we learn to share ordinary, working landscapes with them.
Since 2002 they have run the Wolf and Lynx Patrols - volunteer field monitoring that started in the Beskydy mountains and spread to the White Carpathians, Jeseníky, Rychlebské hory, eastern, northern and western Bohemia, Kokořínsko, Brdy and Šumava. Hundreds of volunteers collect data on carnivore presence and help uncover poaching.
Beyond monitoring they do education and outreach, protect migration corridors and habitats, help livestock farmers guard their herds, publish scientific and popular studies, and cooperate with hunters, foresters, the Nature Conservation Agency and universities. Legal protection alone is not enough - illegal killing and habitat fragmentation remain the biggest threats.
You can join in too: sign up for the patrols, report a sighting or tracks, use their CarniTrack app, or support them financially at selmy.cz.
Volunteer field monitoring from the Beskydy mountains to Šumava - collecting presence data and uncovering poaching.
Talks, publications and busting myths about carnivores - especially where wolves and lynx actually live.
Keeping the landscape permeable so carnivores can migrate and populations stay connected.
Helping protect herds with fences and guarding dogs, reducing conflict between carnivores and people.
I support this project directly, not through proceeds from a specific edition.
All direct support of the project goes through the organization's official website.
